How Do You Lead Transformation Without Losing Your Humanity? | A Live Coaching Conversation with Liz Mackay

Summary:

What does it actually take to lead a team through fast, high-stakes transformation without losing the trust of the people doing the work?

This week on The UpLevel Podcast, join us in this live coaching session with seasoned talent leader Liz Mackay as she brings a question so many leaders are covertly wrestling with right now: how do you hold speed, performance, and cost discipline in one hand, and genuine humanity in the other, without one collapsing the other?

Liz has spent more than two decades helping organizations grow and change. But underneath the titles and the transformation roadmaps, she came to this conversation asking something more personal: do I believe I'm the kind of steward my people need right now?

This episode moves through embodiment and stillness. By the end, Liz names a specific, practical 30-day practice she's committing to and a belief she's ready to release.

If you're leading people through change and wondering how to stay grounded while everything moves fast, this conversation is for you.

In this episode, we'll explore:

  • Leading a "messy middle" transformation without losing trust

  • The difference between solving fast and solving well

  • Naming and working with a saboteur (limiting belief)

  • How to lead through organizational transformation without losing your humanity

  • Why high-performing leaders can become overly focused on solutions

  • How embodiment can become another source of leadership intelligence

  • Why leaders need to allow people room to make mistakes and grow

  • How vulnerability can strengthen connection with a team

  • What it means to be a steward of people during a difficult period of change

  • How a leader's personal behavior can influence the culture around them

  • What kind of legacy leaders leave through the people they develop

If this conversation has you asking similar questions about your own leadership right now, Executive Coaching is built for leaders navigating exactly this kind of complexity and pressure. You can learn more here: https://www.uplevelproductions.com/copy-of-services

Order of Topics:

  • Creating safety for a live coaching conversation

  • Liz's leadership challenge during transformation

  • What does stewardship mean?

  • Envisioning the leader Liz wants to become

  • Creating space for other leaders to step forward

  • Why making room for mistakes matters

  • Reconnecting with humanity and community

  • What slowing down reveals

  • The connection between embodiment and leadership

  • Liz's 30-day experiment

  • Modeling vulnerability for the team

  • Leadership, legacy, and stewardship

Action Items:

  • Try the 5-minute movement reset. Before you open your laptop or leave the house each morning, give your body five minutes of movement. It can be stretching, dancing, or a short walk. The goal isn't fitness. It's reconnecting with your body before you lead anyone else's day.

  • Name your own saboteur. Notice the story you tell yourself about why you operate the way you do ("I just move fast," "I don't have time to slow down"). Ask whether that story is still true or whether it's protecting you from something uncomfortable.

  • Practice the pause before you solve. The next time someone brings you a problem, resist the urge to jump straight to a fix. Ask one more question first. Give the moment room before you move it toward a solution.

  • Use intrude and bottom line on yourself. When you catch yourself talking in circles or performing competence instead of getting to the point, stop and ask: what's the actual heart of what I'm trying to say?

  • Create real room for mistakes. Tell your team directly that you expect some things to go wrong as they grow, and mean it. Psychological safety gets built through specific permission, not general encouragement.

  • Show your range on purpose. If your team only sees you as driven and directive, let them see a different side. Slow down in a meeting. Ask more than you tell. Range builds trust faster than consistency alone.

  • Write your one-year vision. Take twenty minutes to write, in detail, who you want to be as a leader a year from now and what impact you want to have had. Read it back to yourself when you're under pressure and start defaulting to old patterns.

  • Share your own growth with your team. Tell the people you lead what you're working on in yourself, not just what you expect from them. Modeling that you're still learning builds more trust than appearing fully finished.

  • Get an accountability partner for the practice that matters most. Whatever action you commit to after this episode, tell someone who will actually check in with you.

  • Ask what your legacy is right now, not someday. Don't wait for a milestone to think about the ripple you're leaving. Ask today: what would the people on my team remember about how I led them through this?
